Debra Howard
by Dana Kester-McCabe

Debra Howard is an expressionist painter whose recent work was inspired by an artist's residency on Tangier Island.

Watch this video to see Debra's work and to hear what she has to say about it.

Debra got her formal training at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida. After forging a career in advertising in San Francisco she chucked it all and began sailing to ports of call in Central and South America for three years. She married someone who loved sailing as much as she did and they sailed around the world for about a decade before she got the opportunity to live on Tangier Island for one year. This culminated in a show at the Ocean City Center For the Arts which is where I met up with her a few weeks ago. Here is Debra Howard:

Though she does some studio painting she loves to work out doors onsite. Debra says that she is trying capture in paint her memory of places and light.

Debra has participated in a number of plein air competitions including those here in Easton, Ocean City, Solomon's Island, and Snow Hill. This year she is giving up life on the water and traveling across the American landscape by truck and RV to compete in other plein air competions.
