The Green and Golden Fleece Tavern
South State St.  Dover, Delaware 19901

A public area designated by William Penn in 1683, and laid out in 1717, The Green has been important to Delaware since early colonial times. Special events are held here throughout the year such as Old Dover Days, the Spring and Summer Performing Arts Series, 4th of July festivities, and Caroling on The Green to name a few. Beautiful old trees shade this historic site and is within walking distance to stores, restaurants, and other historic sites in the capital city.

At the site of the former Golden Fleece Tavern on The Green, Delaware's constitutional delegates met and were the first to ratify the Constitution of the United States, thus making Delaware "The First State". A tavern sign and bronze plaque mark the site of this historic event.
