The Sultana Education Center

In 1997, a handful of education-minded community members decided to build a replica of a British Schooner, the Sultana, and use her teach young people about the ecology, history and culture of the Chesapeake Bay. Four years later, their full-scale reproduction of a vessel that sailed the Chesapeake in the years before the American Revolution, was launched. Since then, tens-of-thousands of students and teachers have sailed on Sultana's decks.

In Fall of 2016, the Foundation opened a stunning new education center that boasts the world's largest relief map of the Chesapeake Bay painted onto the floor and a discovery area where aquarium tanks hold creatures from the bay.

Sultana’s professional development programs offers teachers from throughout the Bay region a chance to increase content knowledge, model innovative pedagogical practices, and demonstrate strategies for incorporating experiential education into classroom lesson plans.

The public can enjoy educational sails on the schooner Sultana, public kayak paddles, adult travel programs, and presentations by guest scholars.
