Easton, Maryland

Distinctly historic, yet far from primitive, this urbane arts-and-culture center is ablaze with unmatched vitality.

Beckoned by upscale galleries, artists' enclaves, distinctive eateries, decadent sweet shops, and boutique wines; many visitors end up moving here. Meanwhile, overnighters lounge by the crackling hearth at a tasteful B&B, inn, or hotel.

The town hosts big-name events throughout the year, from the Chesapeake Film Festival in September, to December's Art Banner Live Auction. Easton is considered one of the top 100 art towns in America.

No need to wait for a special occasion, though: Red-hot art, food, and drinks are dished up daily.
