After the presents are opened and the last of the cookies consumed, it’s time to plan for the long New Year’s weekend that lies ahead. Consider it a great opportunity to unwind after the last few weeks of parties and merriment while looking forward ringing in 2019. If you are thinking about getting away but your budget is busted from holiday spending with not quite enough left over for expensive airfare, don’t despair. Just a short drive gets you “away” to our small towns that have some seriously fun events planned for New Year’s Eve — just a little less crowded or costly.

Ocean City restaurants are open and ready to welcome revelers with live entertainment, top-notch cuisine and even fireworks at Northside Park at midnight during the Winterfest of Lights. Shop, dine and enjoy since many of Ocean City’s businesses take a winter hiatus after the holiday. Sales in surf shops and boutiques can score you some finds that put you in the summer spirit.
Nearby Berlin’s New Year’s Eve ball drop has been growing in popularity. Bring the kids for ball drop from 5-6pm with cookies, hot chocolate, dancing and the Berlin Bubble Stomp. At 10pm, the grownups get the party started with a Burley Oak (Berlin’s local brewery) beer truck, wind and food vendors along with dancing in the streets and a light show. Of course, there’s a ball drop at midnight.
Ring in the New Year’s in Downtown Salisbury, with the 2019 New Years Eve Ball Drop, presented by Gillis Gilkerson! Rev up those noisemakers, and get ready for a night filled with live music by AMP Studios and the Tops Cut Off DJ Team, plus giveaways and confetti at midnight! New Year’s Eve Ball Drop 2019 is an all-ages, family friendly community event held from 9pm – just after midnight held on Monday, December 31, 2018 at the intersection of Main Street and N. Division Street. Beer, wine and champagne will be available for purchase outside, and local food trucks will be on-site. Free parking will be available in lot one and in the parking garage.
Want to get dressed up and stay indoors? The Heritage Shores of Seaford, DE hosts a New York-style gala event. Dress to impress and enjoy a 4-course dinner plus hors d’oeuvres and late-night snacks, live music and champagne at midnight.
In Cambridge, they don’t ball drop, they boat drop! Downtown Cambridge hosts a New Year’s Eve Boat Drop with a small replica of a deadrise — the traditional waterman’s workboat — dropping at midnight on Dec. 31 to bring in the New Year. Ring in the New Year in Historic Downtown Princess Anne, Maryland. Help Marshall Muskrat welcome 2019 as he descends to Somerset Avenue at midnight.
