The Delmarva Peninsula is known for the ocean and bay beaches, charming small towns, fresh food from land and sea, but our craft beer scene has exploded with industry leading breweries all over the area. The craft brews on Delmarva are worth traveling for.
Tony Russo is a beer writer working on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He recently visited Dewey Beer Company in Dewey Beach, Delaware — one of the 30 breweries here on the Delmarva Peninsula.
Many Eastern Shore beers came out of a revival of old buildings that had fallen into disuse for some reason. In Cambridge, RAR took an old pool hall and reimagined it as a brewery. In Salisbury, EVO took over an old ice house, which had the best water in the region but was just going unused. Now, the water becomes beer that gets shipped pretty much all over the East Coast.
in Delaware, there’s tons of good breweries including Revelation, Dogfish Head, Big Oyster and Crooked Hammock — to name a few. You can bike to breweries along the various trails connecting Lewes and Rehoboth.
Craft breweries are always experimenting. You can go to one brewery every week and never try the same thing twice and a lot of the breweries are dog friendly, almost all of them are kid-friendly and each of them is people friendly.
So pick a couple of breweries, spend a day, spend a week — and see for yourself what makes the craft beer scene on Delmarva so special.
